Mi Fu

Chinese artist (1051-1107)

Broad, wet ink dots applied with a flat brush define the landscape technique developed by Mi Fu, a central figure in Northern Song dynasty aesthetics. Beyond his visual contributions, he established himself as a prominent poet, connoisseur, and calligrapher, securing a lasting position among the Four Calligraphers of Song alongside figures such as Su Shi and Huang Tingjian.

Early Life and Imperial Connections

Born in 1051, Mi Fu possessed family roots potentially linked to the Kumo Xi tribe, with some historical analysis suggesting distant Sogdian heritage. His mother served as a wet nurse to Emperor Shenzong, granting him access to the royal court. This early environment facilitated his entry into public service, where he initially worked as a Reviser of Books in the imperial library before holding several regional posts.

Career in the Civil Service

Mi Fu balanced artistic pursuits with official responsibilities across Henan, Anhui, and beyond. In 1103, he served as the Military Governor of Wuwei. By 1104, he returned to the capital to assume the role of Professor of Painting and Calligraphy, eventually serving as Secretary to the Board of Rites. His career concluded with a tenure as the Military Governor of Huaiyang.

Artistic Methodology and Writing

As a calligrapher, Mi Fu drew inspiration from Wang Xizhi, while his poetry reflected the influence of Li Bai. His approach to art was deeply analytical; he authored Huashi, or History of Painting, which provided technical guidance on the preservation, cleaning, and mounting of artworks. He famously advocated for the consumption of wine to achieve the mental state required for precise calligraphy and sketching.

Collecting and Legacy

Throughout his life, Mi Fu maintained an extensive collection of ancient writings and paintings. He categorized his acquisitions, keeping certain pieces private while displaying others to guests. He requested burial at the gate of Helin Temple on Mount Huaguo in Jiangsu, where his grave remains. His son, Mi Youren, continued the family tradition by interpreting and advancing his father's distinct artistic style.
