Early Career and Move to Bayern Munich
Before his long-term tenure in Bavaria, Scholl played for SV Nordwest Karlsruhe from 1976 until 1982, subsequently joining Karlsruher SC. He remained there until 1992, at which point he transferred to Bayern Munich. Across fifteen seasons with the club, he participated in 468 competitive matches, scoring 116 goals. Scholl earned 36 caps for the German national team between 1995 and 2002, netting eight goals. He contributed to the success of the 1996 European Championship team. Despite his popularity, he was notably excluded from the squad for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, making him one of the most successful German players who never participated in that specific tournament. Persistent injuries hindered his ability to maintain a consistent presence on the national side.

Following his retirement from professional play, Scholl transitioned into coaching. He served as interim head coach for Bayern Munich II starting in April 2009, later moving into a permanent managerial role. After a hiatus to obtain his coaching licence, he returned to the position.
