Medhi Lacen

Medhi Gregory Giuseppe Lacen recorded 273 appearances and seven goals across ten seasons in the Spanish top division during his professional career. Born in Versailles, France, on 15 March 1984, the defensive midfielder held citizenship in both France and Algeria, eventually choosing to represent the Algerian national team on the global stage across two separate FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Early Career and Move to Spain

Lacen started his professional career at Stade Lavallois before moving to ASOA Valence. His trajectory shifted in 2005 when he moved to the Spanish side Deportivo Alavés, making his top-flight debut on 15 October 2005 in a draw against Villarreal CF. He remained with the Basques for two second-division seasons before signing a three-year contract with Racing de Santander on 15 August 2008.

Establishment at Racing and Getafe

During his tenure at Racing de Santander, Lacen solidified his role as a first-choice defensive midfielder, scoring three goals in the 2009–10 campaign, including one against Xerez CD in December 2009. In May 2011, he transitioned to Getafe CF on a four-year deal. He remained with the Madrid-based club until January 2018, appearing in 187 competitive matches and recording a goal against Sevilla FC in April 2012. He concluded his playing time in Spain with a short stint at Málaga CF.

International Representation

Although born in France to an Algerian father and Italian mother, Lacen qualified for the Algerian national team. After an administrative delay prevented his 2006 debut, he played his first game for Algeria on 3 March 2010 against Serbia. He participated in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, as well as the 2013 and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. His primary tournament partner in midfield was Hassan Yebda.
