Maria Jeritza emerged from the chorus at the Brno City Theatre in 1904 to become an operatic sensation known as The Moravian Thunderbolt. By 1912, her performances for Emperor Franz Joseph I at Bad Ischl secured her a pivotal contract at the Vienna State Opera, launching a career that defined the golden age of European and American vocal performance.
European Rise and Imperial Patronage
Born Marie Jedličková in Brno, the soprano pursued early training at the Brno Conservatory and private studies in Prague. Following her debut in Olomouc in 1906, she performed at Theater Dortmund and the Munich Art Theatre. Her appointment to the Vienna Volksoper preceded her tenure at the Vienna State Opera, where she debuted in Max von Oberleithner's Aphrodite in 1912. Her stylistic range included Wagnerian roles and an extensive collaboration with Richard Strauss, including originating the title role in Ariadne auf Naxos and the Empress in Die Frau ohne Schatten.

In 1921, Jeritza debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Marietta in Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Die tote Stadt. Her American popularity mirrored her European status, earning her a salary comparable to Enrico Caruso. She introduced several works to American audiences, including the title roles in Puccini's Turandot in 1926 and Leoš Janáček's Jenůfa in 1924. She balanced her commitments between the Met and Vienna until 1935, later performing charity concerts in the 1950s to support the reconstruction of the war-damaged Vienna State Opera.
Honours and Later Life
Throughout her life, Jeritza maintained strong ties to Austria, receiving numerous accolades including the Great Golden Medal of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria, the Ring of Honour of the City of Vienna, and the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art First Class. She eventually became a naturalized American citizen, residing in New Jersey during her final years. She died in 1982 in Orange and was interred at Holy Cross Cemetery.
