January 2024 marked a milestone for the European Space Agency when Marcus Wandt launched as part of the Axiom Mission 3, becoming the third Swedish astronaut to reach space. By transitioning from a reserve selection to a mission-ready project astronaut in record time, he established himself as the fastest-trained individual in space exploration history.
Early Career and Military Training
Born in 1980 in Mora Parish, Wandt pursued a path rooted in engineering and aviation. He attended Sundsta-Älvkullegymnasiet before earning a master’s degree in electrical engineering at Chalmers University of Technology in 2007. Between 2003 and 2014, he served as a fighter pilot within the Swedish Air Force, operating the Saab JAS 39 Gripen. His military trajectory included advanced instruction at the United States Naval Test Pilot School, where he graduated at the top of his class to qualify as an experimental test pilot.

Following his military tenure, Wandt joined SAAB Aeronautics in 2014. His expertise in flight operations led to his promotion to chief test pilot and head of flight operations by 2020. In 2022, he entered the European Space Agency astronaut selection process, competing against approximately 22,500 applicants. He was successfully appointed to the 2022 ESA astronaut group, serving initially as a reserve before his rapid elevation to project astronaut for the Axiom Mission 3.
The Muninn Mission
The Muninn mission, named after one of the two ravens from Norse mythology, took place from January 18, 2024, to February 9, 2024. During his 18-day stay aboard the International Space Station, Wandt conducted various scientific experiments. Supported by the Swedish National Space Agency, these initiatives included cognition research managed by KTH Royal Institute of Technology and stem cell studies led by Uppsala University. The mission involved a total investment of 400,000,000 kr, with Saab acting as the primary private financial contributor.
