Belka served as Minister of Finance of Poland on two occasions, first in 1997 and again from 2001 to 2002. He eventually ascended to the office of Prime Minister, serving from 2004 to 2005. His political responsibilities expanded to include the Ministry of Sport during his premiership. In 2010, he began a six-year term as Governor of the National Bank of Poland, navigating complex economic landscapes and public controversy surrounding leaked transcripts in 2014, for which he declined to resign.
International Financial Policy
His career extended into significant global assignments, beginning with his role as director of economic policy for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq between 2003 and 2004, where he managed currency reform and banking systems. He later served as executive secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe and, starting in 2008, as director of the European Department at the International Monetary Fund. His international work also included serving as an advisor to JP Morgan and as a member of the Trilateral Commission.
European Parliamentary Service
In 2019, Belka was elected to the European Parliament, representing the Łódź constituency. During his 2019–2024 term, he acted as vice-president of the S&D Group and participated in the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. He also served on the Subcommittee on Tax Matters and maintained involvement with the delegation for relations with the United States. His tenure in the European Parliament concluded in 2024 after he failed to secure re-election.
