Early Career and Comics
During the 1970s, Caro worked as an editor and designer for the publication Métal hurlant. His illustrative work appeared in L'Écho des savanes and Fluide Glacial. In these early creative endeavors, he often worked alongside Gilles Adrien, who eventually participated in his later film projects. This period established his foundation in graphic design and narrative construction before he transitioned into full-time filmmaking.

Caro met Jean-Pierre Jeunet in 1974 at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Their initial work included the 1978 short L'évasion and the 1980 film Le manège, which received the César Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1981. The pair co-directed the 1991 feature Delicatessen, winning a Gold Hugo in Chicago and the Tokyo Gold Prize. They later released the science fantasy feature The City of Lost Children in 1995, which appeared at the Cannes Film Festival.
Solo Projects and Later Contributions
Following his work with Jeunet, Caro focused on his solo career as a director and art director. He released his first solo feature film, Dante 01, in 2008. His subsequent directing credits include the 2009 documentary Astroboy à Roboland and the 2018 short film Loop. He also contributed to projects led by Jan Kounen, working as a character designer and actor. In 2011, he joined the development of the 3D animated project Windwalkers: Chronicle of the 34th Horde as an art director and visual effects supervisor, though the project was abandoned in 2015 after disputes over script changes.
