Early Development in East Harlem
Born Marco Antonio Muñiz in 1968 in Manhattan, he was the youngest of eight children. Raised in East Harlem, he received early musical instruction from his father, Felipe Muñiz, a professional guitarist. He listened to diverse influences including rock, rhythm and blues, and salsa figures like Tito Puente, Héctor Lavoe, and Rubén Blades, which informed his later approach to Latin music.

Before achieving acclaim as a salsa performer, Anthony worked as a session singer and songwriter for freestyle and underground house music. He released his first record, Rebel, in 1988. During this period, he collaborated with producers Little Louie Vega and Todd Terry on various club tracks. He also performed as a backup vocalist for the pop group Menudo.
Ascent in Salsa
His shift to salsa followed hearing Juan Gabriel’s song Hasta Que Te Conocí. In 1993, he released his Spanish-language debut, Otra Nota. His 1995 follow-up, Todo a su tiempo, achieved gold status in the United States and Puerto Rico. By 1997, he had become the top-selling salsa artist in the world, regularly headlining venues such as Madison Square Garden.
Crossover and Continued Success
In 1999, Anthony expanded his market reach with a self-titled English-language album featuring the hit I Need to Know, which reached the Billboard Top 5. He has earned numerous accolades, including four Grammy Awards and eight Latin Grammy Awards. He holds the record for the most number-one songs on the Billboard Latin Tropical Airplay chart.
