Manoj Kumar entered the Indian film industry in 1957 with a debut in Fashion, beginning a career that spanned more than four decades and 55 motion pictures. Born in Abbottabad in 1937, he migrated to Delhi as a child during the partition of India before graduating from Hindu College and adopting a professional name inspired by the 1949 film Shabnam.
Early Career and Breakthrough
After appearing in minor roles in Sahara, Chand, and Honeymoon, Kumar achieved a breakthrough lead role in the 1961 film Kaanch Ki Gudiya. He later gained prominence in the 1962 blockbuster Woh Kaun Thi? and the successful production Hariyali Aur Rasta. These initial successes established his presence within the Hindi cinema landscape, moving beyond his early, lesser-noticed projects.

His career took a patriotic direction in 1965 with the film Shaheed, which depicted the life of Bhagat Singh. Following the 1965 Indo-Pakistani war, Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri encouraged him to produce a film based on the slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kissan. This prompted his directorial debut, Upkar, released in 1967. The film became the third-highest-grossing production of its time and earned him a National Film Award along with his first Filmfare Award for Best Director.
Box Office Successes and Industry Awards
Throughout the 1970s, Kumar directed and starred in several high-performing films, including the 1974 social drama Roti Kapada Aur Makaan and the 1975 film Sanyasi. He achieved critical success as an actor, receiving the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his role in the 1972 film Be-Imaan. His 1970 release, Purab Aur Paschim, secured a significant following in the United Kingdom, where it held box office records for 23 years.
Later Work and Retirement
Kumar directed his final film, Jai Hind, in 1999, which featured his son, Kunal Goswami. Following his retirement from acting after the 1995 production Maidan-E-Jung, he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2004, he entered the political sphere by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was recognized for his contributions to the arts with the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015.
