Born on December 11, 1922, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, Maila Elizabeth Syrjäniemi spent her childhood in Ashtabula, Ohio, and Astoria, Oregon. Following her graduation from Astoria High School in 1940, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting. Her early career included work as a showgirl, chorus dancer, and model for figures such as Man Ray and Alberto Vargas. She attempted to establish herself on Broadway, notably in the production Catherine Was Great, though she was released from the cast before the show's run concluded.

The Vampira character originated from a costume based on Charles Addams’s cartoons. After producer Hunt Stromberg Jr. secured her contact information, Nurmi began hosting The Vampira Show on KABC-TV in May 1954. The program featured her gliding through fog to introduce horror films while reclining on a Victorian couch. The character utilized signature bat-shaped glasses and ghoulish humor, maintaining popularity through public stunts, such as a mock campaign for Night Mayor of Hollywood.
Film Appearances and Later Recognition
After her television series moved to KHJ-TV and eventually concluded, Nurmi pursued film work. She appeared in Ed Wood’s 1959 production, Plan 9 from Outer Space. Although billed as Vampira in other 1959 features like The Beat Generation and The Big Operator, she did not perform as the character in those roles. In 2014, examinations of her personal diaries confirmed she served as the model for Maleficent in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.
