Luna Maya: Indonesia's Borrowed Horror Crown

In November 2018, an Indonesian film opened in which a heavily pregnant woman is impaled on bamboo by four men robbing her house, buried in her own garden to hide the crime, and returns as a *sundel bolong* — the Indonesian ghost with a hole in her back — to dismantle her killers one by one. *Suzzanna: Bernapas dalam Kubur* took 3.3 million admissions and finished as the second most-watched Indonesian film of the year. The startling part was who was under the shroud. Luna Maya, until then best known as a cover girl turned romantic-comedy lead and television host, was playing Suzzanna herself: the revered queen of Indonesian horror, in a remake of her own 1981 film *Sundelbolong*. It was the most dangerous casting decision of Maya's career and it rebuilt her.

Denpasar

Luna Maya Sugeng was born on 26 August 1983 in Denpasar, Bali, to Uut Bambang Sugeng and Desa Maya Waltraud Maiyer, an Austrian who had lived in Indonesia for years. The mixed heritage produced the face that would eventually sell Lux soap, XL Axiata mobile plans and Toshiba electronics across the archipelago, and it also produced the standard Indonesian entertainment-industry ambivalence about *blasteran* looks — an advantage in casting, a permanent question about authenticity.

She entered the industry through the front door of teen media. In 1999, at sixteen, she placed third in the cover-girl competition run by the magazine *Aneka Yess!*, in the same intake as Fanny Fabriana and Fera Feriska. Signed to Look Model Indonesia, she worked catwalk and advertising, and did the other thing an Indonesian model of that era did to become recognisable: she appeared in music videos, for Cool Colors' "Satu yang Pasti," Naff's "Yang Tak Pernah Bisa Mencintaimu" and Sheila on 7's "Sahabat Sejati."

The Long Middle

The film career started in 2004 with two very different debuts in the same year: the teen comedy *30 Hari Mencari Cinta*, in which she played the antagonist and drew good notices, and the horror picture *Bangsal 13*. What followed was a decade of steady, mostly commercial work — *Brownies* in 2005, *Cinta Silver* alongside Rima Melati and Catherine Wilson, *Ruang*, *Jakarta Undercover*, *Pesan Dari Surga*, Rudy Soedjarwo's *In the Name of Love* in 2008 — plus soap operas, presenting jobs and endorsements. She was nominated for the Citra Award for Best Leading Actress at the 2006 Indonesian Film Festival. In 2008 *Globe Asia* ranked her the fifth-richest artist in Indonesia. She sang, too, joining Dewi Sandra and Sandra Dewi on "Play," Indonesia's Euro 2008 theme.

Then, in 2010, the career detonated. An intimate video involving Maya and her then-boyfriend Nazril Irham — Ariel, the singer of Peterpan — was leaked online. Ariel was arrested and, in January 2011, sentenced to three and a half years in prison. Maya was named a suspect; she was never tried, though her suspect status was still being litigated as late as August 2018, when the South Jakarta District Court upheld it. Lux dropped her contract. For an actress whose commercial value rested substantially on advertising, this was a career-threatening event, and the asymmetry of the punishment — a woman losing her endorsements over a private recording she did not release — became one of the defining Indonesian celebrity scandals of the decade.

Becoming Suzzanna

The comeback was slow and then abrupt. Maya kept working, in *Filosofi Kopi 2: Ben & Jody*, in *The Doll*, in television. But it was the invitation from Soraya Intercine Films to play Suzzanna that changed the terms.

Suzzanna was, to Indonesian audiences, not merely a horror star but the queen of the form, and impersonating her was closer to playing Elvis than to playing a role. Maya went under heavy makeup to approximate the older star's face and manner, and the film — directed by Rocky Soraya and Anggy Umbara, written by Bene Dion Rajagukguk, opposite Herjunot Ali — reproduced the 1981 original's grammar rather than modernising it. It was nominated for Best Film at the Bandung Film Festival, and Maya collected a Piala Maya and an Indonesian Movie Actors Award in 2019.

The franchise held. *Suzzanna: Santet Ilmu Pelebur Nyawa* followed, with Maya promising a different creature entirely: "The first film was about a *sundel bolong* ... while this one is about *santet*, so it'll be different." Her preparation was characteristically literal — "I'll also be researching more about *santet*. If I could, I hope I'd be able to meet with *santet* shaman to observe the process." *Suzzanna: Malam Jumat Kliwon*, a remake of the 1986 film, opened in August 2023 opposite Achmad Megantara and passed a million admissions in six days, only the seventh Indonesian film to do so, taking a quarter of all national screenings. "Mbak Suzzanna seneng banget!" Maya wrote — Suzzanna is very happy.

Alongside it she hosted and judged *Indonesia's Next Top Model* from 2020 until its cancellation in 2023, and built out a business portfolio — the fashion label Luna Habit, plus food and beauty ventures. In May 2025, at forty-one, she married the actor Maxime Bouttier at the COMO Shambhala Estate in Ubud.

Why Luna Is Called a Genius

She is not an intellectual figure and nobody serious has claimed she is; the case for her, if there is one, is a craft case and a strategic one. The craft is specific. In the Suzzanna films Maya is doing impersonation, not interpretation — she is reproducing another actress's manner and the peculiar theatrical rhythm of Indonesian horror performance of the 1980s — while buried under makeup that alters most of the face an actor normally works with. What survives that is posture, eyeline and timing, and Maya's control of those three is what makes the films play as tribute rather than parody. It is the same discipline a good mimic has, applied at feature length, and Indonesian audiences validated it in the only currency the industry counts: 3.3 million tickets in 2018, a million in six days in 2023.

The strategic intelligence is the more interesting claim. Maya was a woman whose commercial persona had been destroyed by a leaked sex tape and who was still formally a criminal suspect eight years later. She reconstructed herself by taking on the most sacred figure in Indonesian genre cinema — a role that carried enormous downside risk and, if it landed, complete legitimacy — and by moving her income out of endorsement, which had proved revocable, and into films and companies she partly controlled.

The counter-case is blunt. Maya has not written or directed; the Suzzanna films are the work of Soraya's producers and their directors, and she is their instrument. Her Citra nomination came in 2006 and did not become a win. Much of her filmography is undistinguished commercial product, and her most-seen performance is, by design, a copy of somebody else's. Genius is the wrong word. Unusual technical discipline and an unusually cold read of her own market is the right one.

Legacy

Maya's significance in Indonesian cinema is double. She is the actress who kept the country's most distinctive horror tradition — the *sundel bolong*, the *santet*, the village-cinema grammar of Suzzanna's era — commercially alive for a generation raised on streaming, and she did it without camp. And she is the most prominent Indonesian woman to survive, in public and at length, a scandal that the law treated as her fault. The Suzzanna films are about a woman murdered, buried, and returning to settle accounts. It is difficult to imagine Maya missed the parallel.
