Raised in the Barrio Santa Cruz of Seville, Cernuda attended the University of Seville, where he earned a Bachelor of Law in 1925. Under the tutelage of Pedro Salinas, he began to define his poetic voice. His early collection, Perfil del aire, emerged during a period of indecision regarding his professional future, during which he moved between legal studies and the intellectual circles of Madrid.

This departure marked the beginning of a lifelong exile. He held academic positions at the University of Toulouse and Mount Holyoke College, eventually settling in Mexico City during the 1950s. His work as a translator and critic continued throughout these years at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
Literary Contribution and Legacy
Cernuda is best recognized for works such as Donde habite el olvido and his comprehensive collection, La realidad y el deseo. He was frank regarding his homosexuality, a stance that made him a notable figure within the cultural landscape of his time. He died in 1963 in Mexico City and was buried at the Panteón Jardín.
