Born in Rome in 1941, Maiani holds citizenship in San Marino. He completed his degree in physics at Sapienza University of Rome in 1964. Early professional experience included a position as a research associate at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and a collaboration with the theoretical physics group led by Raoul Gatto at the University of Florence. Maiani became a professor of theoretical physics at Sapienza University of Rome in 1976. Over the following decades, he held visiting appointments at the École normale supérieure in Paris and CERN. His extensive research portfolio includes over 100 scientific publications. In 1974, he collaborated with Guido Altarelli to describe octet enhancement in weak non-leptonic decays. His 1976 analysis of CP violation in the six-quark theory offered predictions regarding the electric dipole moment of the neutron. During the 1980s, he transitioned toward numerical simulations of lattice QCD, contributing to predictions regarding pseudoscalar charmed mesons and B mesons.
Administrative and Institutional Leadership
Maiani served as the president of the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare from 1993 to 1998. His institutional influence expanded as he acted as a scientific delegate to the CERN Council and served as its president in 1997. He later held the position of Director General of CERN from January 1999 until the conclusion of 2003. Additionally, he served as the president of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche from 2008 to 2011.
