Lloyd Blankfein

The commodities trading firm J. Aron & Co. was acquired by Goldman Sachs in 1981, initiating a career path that placed Lloyd Blankfein at the head of a global financial institution. Born in the Bronx in 1954, his trajectory spanned from early academic success in New York to the highest executive offices of the American banking sector during a period of significant economic upheaval.

Academic and Legal Foundation

Raised in the Linden Houses project in Brooklyn, Blankfein excelled in public schools, graduating as valedictorian from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1971. He attended Harvard College, where he completed a B.A. in history in 1975, followed by Harvard Law School. His initial professional years were spent as a lawyer at Proskauer Rose and Donovan, Leisure, Newton & Irvine before he transitioned into commodities trading.

Ascension to Executive Leadership

Blankfein joined J. Aron & Co. in 1982. Following the firm's integration into Goldman Sachs, he managed currency and commodities divisions from 1994 to 1997. Under the leadership of Henry Paulson, Blankfein gained influence, ultimately serving as president and chief operating officer from 2004 until 2006.

Navigating the Financial Crisis

Taking the helm shortly before the 2008 financial crisis, Blankfein directed Goldman Sachs through a period of market volatility. The bank utilized low interest rates to expand its market share as competitors faced insolvency or acquisition. In 2009, he was recognized as the Financial Times Person of the Year for the firm’s trading profits. His management of the crisis led to testimony before the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission and the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations in 2010, where he defended the bank's role as a market maker.

Strategic Initiatives and Tenure

During his final years as CEO, which concluded at the end of 2018, Blankfein implemented shifts in hiring and policy. In 2018, he prioritized the recruitment of candidates with quantitative and technological proficiency, designated as strategists. Furthermore, he initiated internal efforts to address gender representation and pay equality within the firm. He has continued his association with the company as senior chairman since 2019.
