Early Development and Collegiate Years
Born in 1972 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Ball grew up in Woodburn and attended Woodlan High School. Because Indiana lacked varsity boys' volleyball programs, his early competitive experience was largely confined to summer seasons. He gained recognition at 15 during the 1987 Olympic Festival. Beyond volleyball, he played high school basketball, an experience he noted as influential to his competitive development. From 1991 to 1995, he attended Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne, playing under his father, Arnie Ball. During his collegiate career, he earned multiple All-American honors and was twice named Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Player of the Year, recording 2,047 assists in a single season.

Ball joined the United States national team in 1994. His Olympic journey began at the 1996 Atlanta Games, followed by appearances in Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004. The 2008 Beijing Olympics marked his fourth tournament, where he helped secure a gold medal after an 8–0 run. Before this victory, he led the U.S. to the 2008 FIVB World League title, earning both Most Valuable Player and Best Setter honors. His international resume also includes a bronze medal at the 1994 FIVB World Championship and a silver at the 1995 Pan American Games.
Professional Clubs and Later Endeavors
At the club level, Ball achieved significant success in Europe. With Iraklis Thessaloniki, he won two silver medals in the CEV Champions League and was recognized as Best Setter in 2004–05. While competing for VC Zenit Kazan, he captured a gold medal in the 2007–08 CEV Champions League and another silver in 2010–11. In 2018, he competed with the U.S. national snow volleyball team. A year later, he became a founding member of the Volleyball League of America. He also operates Team Pineapple, a volleyball clinic, alongside his father.
