Formative Years and Education
Born in Oslo in 1966 to parents Liv Ullmann and Ingmar Bergman, she spent her formative years between Norway and New York City. Ullmann moved from her work as an influential critic to fiction with her 1998 release, Before You Sleep. Subsequent books, including Stella Descending and Grace, solidified her reputation. The latter received the Norwegian Readers’ Prize in 2002 and was named among the top ten novels of that year by the Danish newspaper Weekendavisen. Her fourth novel, A Blessed Child, earned international recognition, including a longlisting for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.
