Lieven Gevaert

industrialist (1868–1935)

The year 1889 marked the start of a production venture in Antwerp that transformed the landscape of Belgian manufacturing. Founded alongside his mother, this initial operation focused on the traditional production of photographic paper. It served as the foundation for a career that moved from small-scale artisanal work to the establishment of major corporate infrastructure in the photography industry.

Development of Gevaert & Co

Following the inception of his early business, the industrialist established Gevaert & Co in 1894. This entity grew significantly over the subsequent decades, leading to its reorganization as N.V. Gevaert Photo-producten in 1920. Long after his death, this company underwent a major structural change in 1964 by merging with Agfa AG. This consolidation created the entity known as Gevaert-Agfa NV, eventually evolving into Agfa-Gevaert NV.

Social and Cultural Advocacy

Beyond his industrial output, he engaged in social reform movements, heavily influenced by the 1891 papal encyclical Rerum novarum and the intellectual contributions of Lodewijk De Raet. He focused on promoting the status of the Dutch language within Belgium, viewing it as a vital tool for establishing a Flemish elite. His commitment to this cause manifested through his support for various initiatives aimed at linguistic and educational progress.

Leadership and Educational Foundations

In 1926, the Vlaamsch Handelsverbond, later known as the Vlaams Economisch Verbond, appointed him as its first chairman. His efforts were not limited to corporate management or political advocacy; he also turned his attention to education. He founded the Sint-Lievenscollege in his home city of Antwerp. During this period, he resided at a property on Belgiëlei until his death in The Hague in 1935.
