His feature film debut occurred in the 1994 dark comedy Mixed Nuts. Throughout the 1990s, he built a profile through roles in independent films like Party Girl, The Daytrippers, and Big Night. He achieved mainstream exposure for his role as Cotton Weary in the Scream film trilogy. His television work includes portraying Orson Welles in the 1999 HBO film RKO 281 and a titular role in the Showtime drama series Ray Donovan, which ran from 2013 to 2020.

Schreiber’s directorial debut arrived in 2005 with the film Everything Is Illuminated.
