Liaquat Ali Khan

1st Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1947 to 1951

The first Prime Minister of Pakistan, Liaquat Ali Khan, assumed office in 1947 and held the position until his assassination in 1951. An influential figure during the transition to statehood, he managed several government portfolios simultaneously, including defense, foreign affairs, and finance, while actively shaping the legislative foundation of the new nation.

Background and Education

Born in 1895 in Karnal, Liaquat Ali Khan belonged to a wealthy family. He pursued his education at the Muhammedan Anglo-Oriental College and later at the Aligarh Muslim University, where he focused on law and political science. Between 1919 and 1921, he attended Exeter College in Oxford. In 1922, he was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple of London but did not practice law.

Political Engagement

Upon returning to his home country in 1923, Khan entered national politics. He served as a member of the Central Legislative Assembly and represented the United Provinces at the legislative council following the 1926 elections. By 1932, he held the position of Deputy President of the UP Legislative Council. His political trajectory shifted toward the All-India Muslim League, where he collaborated with Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Administrative and Ministerial Roles

Before the partition, Khan served as the Minister of Finance in the interim government. Following the formation of Pakistan in 1947, he became the nation's first Prime Minister. His foreign policy centered on aligning with the Western Bloc during the early years of the Cold War.

Final Years

In 1949, Khan introduced the Objectives Resolution, defining the state as an Islamic democracy. His leadership faced significant internal pressure, including an attempted coup in March 1951. Later that year, on 16 October 1951, he was killed by an Afghan militant named Said Akbar while speaking in Rawalpindi. He was subsequently buried at Mazar-e-Quaid.
