His breakthrough occurred with the 1993 Holocaust drama Schindler's List, where he portrayed Oskar Schindler. This performance led to an Academy Award nomination. He subsequently headlined various historical and biographical dramas, including Michael Collins, Rob Roy, and Kinsey, the latter of which earned him the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor in 2004.
