Public teachings of Falun Gong commenced on 13 May 1992 in Changchun, led by Li Hongzhi. This event marked the beginning of a rapid expansion for the new religious movement, which eventually garnered significant attention within Chinese qigong circles before state authorities initiated a suppression campaign against the organization at the end of the decade.
Public Emergence and Growth
Li Hongzhi first demonstrated his system at the 1992 Oriental Health Expo in Beijing. During this exhibition, the event director designated his practice as a star cultivation system, following reports that Li helped a wheelchair-bound man regain the ability to walk. Throughout the 1990s, the movement attracted participants from diverse segments of society, including individuals within government and scientific circles. As qigong gained traction, it also faced increasing scrutiny from authorities regarding the validity of its paranormal claims.

In 1995, Li moved to the United States, later becoming a permanent resident in 1998 to avoid escalating conflicts with the Chinese government. Following this departure, the state formally outlawed the movement in 1999, labeling it a heretical organization. The subsequent government response included intense propaganda campaigns, reports of systematic torture, and allegations of forced organ harvesting directed at practitioners who remained in China.
Core Tenets and Organizational Extensions
The foundation of the practice relies on the principles of truthfulness, benevolence, and forbearance, which Li identifies as the fundamental characteristics of the universe. Adherents focus on upgrading their mind-nature through the abandonment of negative attachments and the performance of five meditative exercises. Beyond these teachings, Li is associated with media entities such as The Epoch Times and New Tang Dynasty Television, as well as the performance arts troupe Shen Yun. These organizations serve to disseminate his philosophical views and associated claims.
Spiritual Narratives
Early biographical accounts of Li, including those appearing in his primary text Zhuan Falun, describe a lineage of training under multiple Buddhist and Taoist masters. These narratives, which emphasize the development of supernatural powers from an early age, were later omitted from printings of his books. Li stated that he preferred the focus to remain on his teachings rather than his personal history or circumstances. His writings contain claims that extraterrestrial beings interact with Earth and that he serves as a figure guiding humanity away from potential destruction.
