Early Education and Career Beginnings
Born on 27 February 1973 in Wuchang, Heilongjiang, Li attended Jixi Normal School. After graduating in 1992, she served for one year as a probationary music teacher in Harbin. In 1993, she enrolled at the Shanghai Theatre Academy, marking the formal start of her professional acting training.

Li gained visibility in 2001 through the series Young Justice Bao. Her film career accelerated with Dayyan Eng’s 2004 production Waiting Alone, which earned a Golden Rooster Award nomination. Subsequently, she appeared in Feng Xiaogang’s A World Without Thieves. Her work in 2009 on The Message resulted in a Best Actress win at the 46th Golden Horse Film Awards. In 2010, she portrayed Shangguan Jing'er in the action-mystery film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame.
International Expansion
Li’s transition to English-language cinema began in 2011 with Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. She appeared as Ada Wong in Resident Evil: Retribution and later joined the Transformers franchise in the 2014 film Transformers: Age of Extinction. Her international filmography also includes the 2018 production The Meg, where she acted alongside Jason Statham.
Philanthropic Engagement
Outside of acting, Li has engaged in various environmental and social projects.
