Transition to Performance
After completing his law degree in 1894 and finishing military service, Sobinov began formal vocal training under Alexander Dodonov and Alexandra Santagano Gorchakova. His repertoire expanded rapidly, incorporating roles in works such as Ruslan and Ludmila, Faust, Manon, Prince Igor, and Eugene Onegin. By 1899, he was performing alongside Feodor Chaliapin, though he maintained strict boundaries regarding his vocal limits, specifically declining the role of Don José in Carmen.

To refine his craft, Sobinov travelled to Italy, performing at La Scala in Milan between 1904 and 1906, and again in 1911. His performance history included appearances at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, the Palais Garnier in Paris, the Royal Opera House in London, the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, and the Teatro Real in Madrid. Critics of the era frequently categorized him among the foremost Russian tenors of his generation.
Revolution and Administration
Following the 1917 Russian Revolution, Sobinov assumed the role of the first elected director of the Bolshoi Theatre. His career moved through various Soviet institutions, including a tenure as chairman of the musical committee of the all-Ukrainian Division of Arts in Kiev and management positions within the Division of Public Education in Sevastopol. He eventually returned to the Bolshoi in 1921, later serving as a deputy of the Moscow City Council and an artistic leader at Konstantin Stanislavski’s operatic studio.
