Kuchma entered the legislative sphere in 1990 as a member of the 1st Supreme Council. He transitioned into executive power in 1992, serving as the Prime Minister of Ukraine until 1993. In 1994, he successfully campaigned for the presidency, defeating the incumbent, Leonid Kravchuk. He held this office for over a decade, navigating significant economic shifts and constitutional changes, most notably overseeing the ratification of the Constitution of Ukraine in 1996.
