The Investigation Is Conducted by ZnaToKi, a prominent Soviet detective series, established Leonid Kanevsky as a household name through his performance as Major Alexander Tomin. Born in Kyiv on 2 May 1939, Kanevsky has built an extensive career spanning over 50 films and television productions while maintaining active roles in both Russian and Israeli theatre.
Early Education and Moscow Theatre
At age 17, Kanevsky relocated to Moscow to attend the Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute, where he studied under Vera Konstantinovna Lvova. His professional stage trajectory began with a seven-year tenure at the Moscow Lenkom Theatre starting in 1960. He subsequently transitioned to the Moscow Malaya Bronnaya Theatre, maintaining a position there until 1991.

Kanevsky debuted in 1963 with a minor role in Forty Minutes Before Dawn. His versatility allowed him to secure diverse parts, ranging from the smuggler in the comedy The Diamond Arm to the haberdasher Bonacieux in the 1978 miniseries D’Artagnan and Three Musketeers. His filmography includes appearances in The Red Tent, The Punisher, and Mary Poppins, Goodbye.
Transition to Israel
In 1991, Kanevsky repatriated to Israel. Alongside director Yevgeny Arye, he co-founded the Gesher Theatre in Tel Aviv. The institution was established primarily with Russian actors from Moscow and Leningrad companies. He later engaged in Israeli television, hosting the game show Ninth Wave on Channel 9 in 2003.
Television Presenting and Recent Roles
Beginning in January 2006, Kanevsky assumed the role of presenter for the NTV documentary series The Investigation Continues... on NTV. His later career includes the lead role in the TV series Semin and its sequel, Semin: Retribution. He also provided the Russian-language voice for the character Finn McMissile in the 2011 animated film Cars 2.
