Lauri Markkanen

Lauri Markkanen achieved a significant milestone in 2023 by becoming the first basketball player ever to be named Finnish Athlete of the Year. Born in 1997 in Vantaa, Finland, he emerged from the local HoNsU team to become an established professional athlete, representing the Finland national team and competing at the highest levels of international basketball.

Early Career and Collegiate Development

Markkanen began his organized play with HBA-Märsky in the Finnish second-tier league from 2014 to 2016. He represented Finland at the FIBA U18 EuroBasket in 2015 and the FIBA U20 EuroBasket in 2016, finishing as the top scorer in both events. In 2016, he enrolled at the University of Arizona. During his lone season with the Arizona Wildcats, he earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors and was selected to the third team All-American by multiple organizations.

Professional NBA Transition

Following his freshman season, Markkanen entered the 2017 NBA draft and was selected seventh overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves. His draft rights were immediately traded to the Chicago Bulls. He made his debut in October 2017, quickly setting an NBA record for most 3-pointers made in an athlete's first three career games. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2018 after leading the Bulls in rebounds.

Career Resurgence and Achievement

After his tenure in Chicago, Markkanen joined the Cleveland Cavaliers before moving to the Utah Jazz in 2022. His performance in Utah led to a career resurgence, highlighted by his first NBA All-Star selection and the Most Improved Player Award in 2023. He also led Finland during the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Following two productive seasons with the Jazz, he secured his tenure with the franchise by signing a five-year contract extension.
