Early Development and Journalism

Born in 1976 in Johannesburg, Beukes pursued an MA in creative writing at the University of Cape Town. Her professional background began in freelance journalism, a career path that spanned a decade and included time working in New York and Chicago. Her reporting appeared in various publications such as The Hollywood Reporter, Nature Medicine, and Marie Claire. Between 2007 and 2008, she earned recognition as Best Columnist in the Western Cape during the Vodacom Journalist of the Year Awards.

Novels and Literary Acclaim

Beukes debuted with the non-fiction work Maverick: Extraordinary Women from South Africa's Past in 2004, followed by her first novel, the cyberpunk-themed Moxyland. Her 2010 work, Zoo City, utilized a re-imagined Johannesburg to explore themes of magic, refugees, and the music industry, earning her the 2011 Arthur C. Clarke Award. Her bibliography expanded with titles including Broken Monsters, set in Detroit, and the 2023 release, Bridge.

Screenwriting and Directing

Beyond her printed work, Beukes has contributed to animated television, serving as head writer for the series URBO: The Adventures of Pax Afrika and writing episodes for Florrie's Dragons and Mouk. She also directed the documentary Glitterboys & Ganglands, which examined the life of a Miss Gay Western Cape contestant. She was involved in the pilot production of the satirical series ZA News, although the project was never broadcast.

Comics and Advocacy

Her foray into comics included the Vertigo series Survivors' Club and writing arcs for the Fables spin-off, Fairest. In 2025, she collaborated with Jeannette Ng to launch the Genre Creators for Trans Rights Auction. This initiative aimed to secure funding for the Triangle Project in South Africa and the UK's Good Law Project, reflecting a commitment to trans rights advocacy.
