Laure Manaudou

French swimmer (born 1986)

Laure Manaudou secured her place in sporting history at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where she delivered France its first-ever women's swimming gold medal by winning the 400-meter freestyle. This victory ignited a dominant international career, marking the beginning of a period during which she became one of the most prolific medalists in the history of French competitive swimming.

Early Success and European Dominance

Born in 1986 in Villeurbanne, Manaudou displayed significant talent early in her career. Her 2004 Athens performance included a silver medal in the 800-meter freestyle and a bronze in the 100-meter backstroke. Shortly thereafter, at the 2004 European Swimming Championships in Madrid, she claimed three gold medals, establishing her versatility across backstroke, freestyle, and relay events.

Record-Breaking Feats

In May 2006, Manaudou achieved a major milestone in Tours by breaking Janet Evans's 18-year-old world record in the 400-meter freestyle. She further improved this time to 4:02.13 at the 2006 European Championships in Budapest, where she collected four titles. Her dominance extended to the 200-meter freestyle at the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne, where she became only the second woman to complete the 100-meter backstroke in under one minute.

Transition and Final Years

Following a difficult 2008 Beijing Olympics where she failed to reach the podium, Manaudou announced her initial retirement in 2009 at age 22. After a brief return to training in the United States with Auburn University and a final appearance at the 2012 London Olympics, she moved away from competitive swimming. Throughout her career, she received the Knight of the Legion of Honour in 2004 and was named L'Équipe Champion of Champions in 2006.
