Dutta won the Gladrags Manhunt and Megamodel Contest in 1995 before claiming the 1997 Miss Intercontinental crown. Her success continued with a victory at the 2000 Femina Miss India contest, which preceded her Miss Universe win. Since 2001, she has served as a United Nations Population Fund Goodwill Ambassador.
