Early Life and Influences
Born in Compton, California, in 1965, Novoselic is the son of Croatian immigrants. His household was bilingual, with Croatian serving as his first language. In 1979, his family relocated to Aberdeen, Washington. During his youth, he lived briefly in Zadar, Croatia, where he encountered punk rock bands such as the Sex Pistols. His formative musical education included listening to artists ranging from Led Zeppelin to Black Sabbath, while his bass playing style was influenced by musicians like Geezer Butler and Paul McCartney.

Following a series of short-lived musical collaborations in Aberdeen, Novoselic and Cobain recruited various drummers before finalizing the Nirvana lineup with Dave Grohl. The band signed with DGC Records, leading to the 1991 release of the commercially successful album Nevermind. Novoselic contributed to songwriting, including the track Polly, and remained with the group until its dissolution in 1994 following the death of Kurt Cobain. During this period, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Post-Nirvana Projects
After the end of Nirvana, Novoselic pursued multiple musical ventures. He formed the band Sweet 75 in 1995 and Eyes Adrift in 2002, releasing one album with each project. His later work included a tenure with the punk rock group Flipper from 2006 to 2009 and contributions to the Foo Fighters album Wasting Light in 2011. Between 2017 and 2020, he performed bass and accordion for the band Giants in the Trees, and he has also been involved in the project 3rd Secret.
Political and Civic Activity
Novoselic has maintained a long-term commitment to political activism. He wrote a weekly column regarding politics and music for the Seattle Weekly from 2007 to 2010. His organizational work includes serving as board chair for FairVote and Zócalo Public Square. In 2023, he assumed a leadership role in the Washington branch of the Forward Party. By 2024, he had established the Cascade Party of Washington.
