Krišjānis Kariņš (b. 1964) — Biography & Facts

Born in 1964 in Wilmington, Delaware, Krišjānis Kariņš transitioned from a background in linguistics and frozen food distribution to lead the Latvian government. A dual citizen of the United States and Latvia, he navigated complex parliamentary coalitions to serve as Prime Minister from 2019 until 2023, following extensive legislative experience in both Riga and Brussels.

Academic and Professional Background

Kariņš earned a Doctor of Philosophy in linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania after attending St. John's College. His academic specialization focused on automatic speech recognition. Upon moving to Latvia in 1997, he pivoted to the private sector as a businessperson, founding and leading a frozen food company until 2002. He also served as president of a firm dealing in automobile and office supplies.

Parliamentary Career and Ministerial Roles

He entered politics as a founding member of the New Era Party, securing a seat in the Saeima in 2002. His tenure in national government included serving as Minister of Economics from 2004 to 2006. Following his time in the cabinet, he continued his parliamentary duties as a deputy of the Saeima from 2006 to 2009. He eventually joined the Unity Party, which later became New Unity.

European Parliament and Prime Ministership

Before leading the national government, Kariņš represented Latvia in the European Parliament for a decade, serving from 2009 to 2019. In 2019, he assumed the role of Prime Minister of Latvia, leading the country through the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2021 Belarus–European Union border crisis. His term ended in September 2023, following his resignation in August due to internal coalition conflicts.
