Kjetil Trædal Thorsen

Snøhetta, the architecture firm that has redefined civic space internationally, began in 1987 under the guidance of Kjetil Trædal Thorsen. Born in 1958 at Haugesund hospital, Norway, he shifted the landscape of modern design through his involvement in major public infrastructure projects, balancing institutional authority with experimental architectural methodologies across several continents.

Early Development and Education

Before establishing his firm in Oslo, Thorsen pursued an international education, spending time in Germany and England before enrolling in architectural studies in Graz, Austria. His early professional experiences included positions at Arbeidsgruppen Hus with Espen Tharaldsen in Bergen from 1982 to 1983, followed by a tenure with Ralph Erskine in Stockholm between 1983 and 1984. He returned to his birthplace in 1985 to work with David Sandved in Haugesund.

Establishing Snøhetta

In 1987, Thorsen joined a collective of young architects to form the practice Snøhetta, named after the highest peak in Dovrefjell National Park. The firm grew to command significant attention through winning high-profile international design competitions. Prior to this, in 1986, he co-founded Galleri Rom, which served as a prominent venue for architectural discourse in Norway.

Major Public Commissions

Thorsen’s leadership has been central to the delivery of several landmark structures. His portfolio includes the museum for the Lillehammer Winter Olympics and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt. In 2007, he collaborated with Olafur Eliasson to design the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London. His work is also defined by the design of the Oslo Opera House, a project that cemented his status within global architectural circles.

Academic and Institutional Roles

Beyond his design practice, Thorsen has contributed extensively to architectural theory and education. Since 2004, he has held a professorship at the Institute for Experimental Studies in Architecture at the University of Innsbruck. His influence extends to industry governance; he is set to chair the 2025 Holcim Foundation Awards jury for the European region.
