Growing up in Billund, Kristiansen held an early connection to the company as the son of Godtfred Kirk Christiansen. Upon assuming the role of president and CEO in 1979, Kristiansen initiated several strategic changes to the company output. His tenure saw the introduction of themed sets, the arrival of minifigures, and the integration of digital initiatives like LEGO.com and Lego Mindstorms. He also expanded the portfolio to include licensed properties. In 2004, he transitioned from daily operations to focus on ownership interests, serving as vice-chairman of the Lego Group board and chairman for KIRKBI A/S, Lego Holding A/S, and the Lego Foundation.
Interests and Recognition
Outside of corporate management, Kristiansen maintains significant land holdings, including the 60,000-acre Strathconon Estate in the Scottish highlands, which he acquired in 1995, later expanding it with the Scardroy and Ledgowan estates. His contributions to the toy industry earned him an induction into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2008. Additional honors include the Freedom Prize from the Max Schmidheiny Foundation, the IMD Distinguished Family Business Award, and the Knight 1st Class of the Order of the Dannebrog.
