Early Career and Legia Warsaw
Born in 1947 in Starogard Gdański, Deyna began his path at Włókniarz Starogard Gdański in 1958. After a single appearance for ŁKS Łódź in 1966, he moved to Legia Warsaw. Because Legia served as the military club for the Polish authorities, Deyna was drafted into the army, facilitating his long-term tenure there. He led the club to Polish Championship titles in 1969 and 1970 and a Polish Cup victory in 1973. Despite interest from prominent European clubs like Real Madrid, which famously attempted to sign him by sending a club shirt with his name, communist state regulations prohibited his transfer abroad for several years.

Deyna reached his international peak during the 1972 Summer Olympics, where he finished as the top goalscorer with nine goals and helped Poland earn the gold medal. He subsequently captained the team at the 1974 FIFA World Cup, where Poland claimed third place, and led the side to a silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics. His performance in 1974 earned him third place in the Ballon d'Or standings. He served as the national team captain from 1973 to 1978, during which time his ability to score directly from corner kicks became a defining attribute of his playmaking style.
Professional Tenure in England and the United States
In 1978, Deyna transferred to the English side Manchester City, becoming one of the first overseas players in the league. He made 43 appearances, scoring 13 goals, including crucial strikes during the 1978–79 relegation battle. Following a period hampered by injuries and managerial turnover, he relocated to the United States in 1981 to sign with the San Diego Sockers. He spent seven years with the organization, participating in both the North American Soccer League and the Major Indoor Soccer League, where he won five championships. During this period, he also appeared in the 1981 film Escape to Victory.
Legacy and Awards
Deyna died in a car accident in San Diego on 1 September 1989. His remains were eventually moved to the Powązki Military Cemetery in 2012. Among his honors were the Piłka nożna magazine player of the year awards in 1973 and 1974, the Knight of the Order of Polonia Restituta, and the Gold Cross of Merit. In 1994, he was named the greatest Polish footballer of the 20th century by the Polish Football Association and national sports press. His jersey number 10 was officially retired by both Legia Warsaw and the San Diego Sockers.
