Turner's professional acting career began in the theater. In 1973, she appeared in the melodrama Plodding Among the Planets in Midland, Texas. After relocating to New York City in 1977, she secured a role in the off-Broadway production of Mister T, followed by her Broadway debut later that year in Gemini at The Little Theatre. Her transition to television occurred in 1978 when she joined the cast of the NBC soap opera The Doctors, playing Nola Dancy Aldrich.
