A degree from California State University, Long Beach, in geography and cartography served as the professional foundation for Kate Edwards, a Los Angeles native born in 1965. Her career bridge between academic geography and the digital landscape began in 1992, leading to significant contributions within Microsoft and the broader international gaming industry.
Microsoft and Geopolitical Strategy
Between 1992 and 2005, Edwards operated as a geopolitical strategist at Microsoft. In 1998, she founded the Geopolitical Strategy team, an internal unit tasked with evaluating risk regarding cultural and political content across software products. Her work touched major projects including the Encarta World Atlas and virtual earth technology. Within Microsoft Studios, she established a quality review process designed to assess the implications of geopolitical content within both PC and Xbox titles.
