Early Career and Education
Born in 1953, Kathleen Sue Nail attended Hazelwood Central High School before graduating from the University of Missouri. She relocated to New York City to pursue acting, securing her initial screen credits on the soap opera The Edge of Night. Her early film transitions included roles in A Little Sex, Dreamscape, and Windy City, the latter directed by Armyan Bernstein.

Capshaw starred in a variety of productions during the 1980s and 1990s. Notable appearances include the 1986 film SpaceCamp, where she played Andie Bergstrom, and the drama Power, which featured Richard Gere and Gene Hackman. Her filmography expanded to include Black Rain, Love Affair, and the 1995 thriller Just Cause. She also starred in and produced the 1999 feature The Love Letter, before her final acting credit in the 2001 television film A Girl Thing.
Transition to Visual Arts
In 2009, Capshaw shifted her professional focus toward painting and portraiture. Her work, which frequently explores the experiences of homeless youth, gained institutional recognition when three pieces were selected as finalists in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery's 2019 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. In 2024, she presented a solo exhibition, Kate Capshaw: Exclusive Tonsorial Services, at the Pérez Art Museum Miami. By 2026, her portrait of Tafari Campbell was included in the Obama Presidential Center.
Personal Life and Family
Married to marketing manager Robert Capshaw from 1976 until 1980, she shares one daughter, Jessica Capshaw, from that union. She married director Steven Spielberg on October 12, 1991, following her conversion to Judaism. The Spielberg–Capshaw household comprises seven children, including those from previous relationships and adoptions.
