Justin Rose

A dramatic birdie from the rough on the 18th hole at the 1998 Open Championship announced the arrival of Justin Rose to the global stage. Finishing as the low amateur at age 17, the Johannesburg-born golfer embarked on a career that would eventually see him claim a major championship, an Olympic gold medal, and the world number one ranking.

Early Development

Born in 1980, Rose relocated to England at age five. He developed his game at various venues, including Tylney Park, Southwood, Hartley Wintney, Royal Winchester, and North Hants golf clubs. His proficiency grew rapidly, as he broke 70 for the first time at age 11 and achieved a plus three handicap by 14.

Professional Transition

Turning professional immediately following his 1998 Open Championship performance, Rose faced immediate challenges. He missed the cut in 21 consecutive events during his early career. By 1999, he earned his European Tour card, and in 2002, he secured his first professional victory at the Dunhill Championship.

PGA Tour Breakthrough

Rose began balancing his schedule between the European and PGA tours in the early 2000s. In 2010, he achieved his first win on American soil at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio. His professional standing solidified further with a 2013 U.S. Open victory, which stands as his lone major championship win to date.

Global Accolades

Beyond his major championship success, Rose achieved the top position in the Official World Golf Ranking in 2018. His international career included securing a gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Despite his consistency, he has finished as the runner-up at five major championships, including three Masters Tournaments and two Open Championships.
