Jukka-Pekka Saraste

The Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble specializing in contemporary music, was co-founded by Jukka-Pekka Saraste in 1983. A Finnish conductor and violinist trained at the Sibelius Academy, he studied under Jorma Panula.

Early Career and Finnish Roots

Born in Heinola in 1956, Saraste received his musical training at the Lahti Conservatory of Music before moving to the Sibelius Academy. His early orchestral experience included roles as a co-principal second violinist and an associate to Leif Segerstam within the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 1987, he began a fourteen-year tenure as the chief conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble for which he later became Conductor Laureate.

International Orchestral Appointments

Saraste held the position of principal conductor at the Scottish Chamber Orchestra between 1987 and 1991. He served as the music director for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1994 to 2001, a period involving labour disputes and efforts to address acoustics at Roy Thomson Hall. Following this, he spent three years as principal guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. His subsequent leadership roles included music directorships at the Oslo Philharmonic from 2006 to 2013 and a position as principal conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne from 2010 to 2019.

Artistic Initiatives and Recent Directorships

Beyond his orchestral roles, Saraste established the Ekenäs Summer Concerts-Festival in 2000. He has maintained close ties to Finnish musical institutions, including the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, where he served as artistic advisor. In April 2022, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra named him its next chief conductor for a term beginning with the 2023–2024 season. His recorded work includes two complete cycles of the symphonies of Jean Sibelius.

Awards and Distinctions

Saraste has received multiple recognitions for his contributions to music. His honours include the Finnish State Prize for Music, granted in 2000, and the Sibelius Medal. He was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal of the Order of the Lion of Finland in 1990 and later received the Insignia of Commander of the Order of the Lion of Finland in 2022. Additionally, he holds an honorary doctorate from York University.
