Juhayman al-Otaybi

Saudi Arabian militant and soldier (1936-1980)

The seizure of the Grand Mosque in Mecca on 20 November 1979 marked the violent culmination of a campaign against the Saudi monarchy led by Juhayman al-Otaybi. A former master sergeant, he commanded hundreds of militants in a two-week siege intended to overthrow the House of Saud, which he accused of abandoning fundamental Islamic principles for secularism and Western influence.

Early Life and Military Service

Born in 1936 in Sajer, al-Otaybi belonged to the 'Utaybah tribe, a prominent group in the Najd region. His lineage was deeply connected to the Ikhwan, the religious militia that had historically fought for and later rebelled against King Abdulaziz. Following limited formal education, he served in the Saudi Arabian National Guard between 1955 and 1973. During this period, he became known for his austere lifestyle and height, standing 188 cm tall.

Religious Radicalization

After ending his military tenure, he relocated to Medina to attend courses at the Islamic University. There, he joined a local Salafi group and befriended Muhammad ibn Abdullah Al Qahtani. He eventually broke away to form his own faction, which he named Ikhwan. This group operated from a makeshift compound and a hostel known as Bayt al-Ikhwan. He grew increasingly hostile toward modern innovations, including the presence of televisions, the integration of women into the workforce, and the depiction of the King on national currency.

The Mecca Siege and Execution

In 1979, al-Otaybi launched his insurrection by taking hostages within the Grand Mosque. He proclaimed that the Mahdi had arrived in the form of one of his leading followers. The confrontation lasted for two weeks and resulted in approximately 800 casualties. Following the recapture of the mosque by Saudi authorities, al-Otaybi and his surviving followers were captured. He was executed in Mecca on 9 January 1980.
