In August 2006, Vargas signed a four-year contract with the Italian club Catania. During his two-year stint in Sicily, he served as a regular starter, assisting the team in maintaining their Serie A status. Following this period, he transferred to Fiorentina in July 2008 for a fee of 12 million euros. At Fiorentina, he adapted to an attacking midfield role, notably scoring a critical penalty in 2009 to help the club advance to the UEFA Champions League knock-out stages. He also appeared for Genoa on a season-long loan, making 20 appearances before returning to the Viola.
La Liga and Final Years
In August 2015, Vargas moved to Real Betis in Spain on a two-year deal. He debuted later that month against Villarreal. After his tenure in Spain, he returned to Peru to play for his original club, Universitario de Deportes, between 2017 and 2018. His playing style was characterized by his versatility in defensive and offensive positions, his proficiency with free-kicks, and his technical ability to cross the ball.
International Representation
Vargas earned his first international cap for the Peru national team during the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification rounds under manager Paulo Autuori.
