Formative Years in Argentina
Born in Balcarce on 24 June 1911, Fangio left school at 13 to pursue an apprenticeship in auto mechanics. His early technical knowledge proved essential as he transitioned from repairing vehicles to building his own. He began his competitive driving career in 1936 using a modified 1929 Ford Model A. By 1940, he secured the Argentine National Championship, a title he successfully defended the following year while competing in the Turismo Carretera series.

Upon entering the inaugural Formula One season in 1950, Fangio secured titles with four distinct manufacturers: Alfa Romeo in 1951, Maserati in 1954 and 1957, Mercedes-Benz in 1954 and 1955, and Ferrari in 1956. His 1957 victory at the German Grand Prix remains a highlight of his career, where he overcame a botched pit stop by repeatedly breaking the lap record to recover his position.
Endurance and Later Life
Beyond grand prix racing, Fangio achieved significant success in endurance events, including a victory at the 1953 Carrera Panamericana and wins at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1956 and 1957. After retiring from active competition, he transitioned into an entrepreneurial role. From 1987 until his death in Buenos Aires in 1995, he served as the honorary president of Mercedes-Benz Argentina.
