Joseph Cuypers was born at Roermond in 1861. His recorded nationality is Kingdom of the Netherlands. He trained at Katholieke Hoogere Burgerschool te Rolduc.
Industrialisation gave architecture iron, glass and the lift, and with them the problems of the railway station, the factory and the tall city block.
He is recorded as architect, furniture designer and illustrator.
Among his best-known works are Sint-Martinuskerk, Sint-Urbanuskerk and Onze Lieve Vrouw Ten Hemelopnemingkerk. Of all the arts, architecture is the one whose failures are hardest to remove.
That the work was built in Kingdom of the Netherlands shaped it: climate, materials, planning law and who holds the budget all decide what can actually be built.
Joseph Cuypers died in 1949, aged 88. The buildings remain, still in use by people who never knew the name - which is the particular afterlife architecture offers.
