Industrial Development and Infrastructure
Upon graduating in 1882, Cattaui initially served the Ministry of Public Works. His technical training in Moravia at a sugar refinery facilitated his later work with Suarès Frères & Co. This partnership proved critical to large-scale infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Helwan railway and the Tanta water works. He was central to the formation of the Société des sucreries and later held leadership roles in diverse entities such as the Compagnie des Eaux du Caire, the Compagnie Frigorifique d'Egypte, and the National Insurance of Egypt.

In 1904, Cattaui collaborated with Sir Ernest Cassel and Suarès Frères to establish the Wadi Kom Ombo Company, a major agricultural land holding firm. His influence extended to the financial sector in 1920 when he co-founded Banque Misr alongside Talaat Harb Pacha, eventually serving on the board of directors. His business interests remained broad, spanning the Union Fonciere d'Egypte and the local operations of Imperial Chemical Industries.
Political Service and Constitutional Role
Cattaui entered the political arena with his election to the legislative assembly in 1913, a tenure that lasted until 1922. He was a member of the 32-person commission tasked with drafting the Egyptian constitution. His ministerial career included serving as Finance Minister from 1924 to 1925 and Minister of Transportation in 1925. He concluded his public life as a member of the Egyptian Senate from 1927 until 1939. During this time, he was named a Pasha in 1912 and received the Order of the Nile and the Commander of the Legion of Honour.
Literary and Community Contributions
Beyond his industrial and governmental activities, Cattaui produced several historical and political texts, including 'Le regime des Capitulations en Egypte' in 1927 and 'Le Khédive Isma'il et la dette de l'Egypte' in 1935. He served as President of the Jewish community of Cairo starting in 1924, a position he maintained for the remainder of his life. His published works covered topics ranging from ancient calendars to the economic institutions of his home country.
