Early Life and Education
Born in Preston in 1945, Delaney was the eldest of four children. His early professional life involved work as an apprentice engineer. He later pursued education as a mature student at the University of Lancaster, where he studied English, history, and sociology, before attending St Martin's College to earn his teaching credentials.
Teaching and Early Literary Output
Before transitioning to full-time writing, Delaney worked as an English teacher at Blackpool Sixth Form College, where he established the Media and Film Studies Department. During the 1980s, he authored science fiction and fantasy titles under the pseudonym J. K. Haderack, a name derived from Frank Herbert’s Dune. These initial forays into adult fiction met with limited commercial success.

Upon the suggestion of an agent to shift his focus toward younger audiences, Delaney revisited a story concept first drafted in 1993. This narrative, informed by local Stalmine legends regarding boggarts, became the foundation for the Spook's series. Following the publication of the second volume, Delaney retired from his teaching post. The series, also known as The Wardstone Chronicles, follows protagonist Tom Ward in his apprenticeship under John Gregory to defend the County from supernatural entities.
Subsequent Series and Final Years
Delaney expanded his bibliography with the science fiction trilogy Arena 13, released between 2015 and 2017, and the dark fantasy duology Aberrations, published from 2018 to 2019. He maintained a creative process that avoided advance plotting, often drawing inspiration from dreams. Delaney died in Manchester in 2022 at age 77, leaving behind his final manuscript, Brother Wulf: Wulf's War, which saw posthumous publication in 2023.
