Early Development and South American Period
Born in Orio in 1908, Jorge Oteiza received his initial education at the Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo School. In 1935, shortly before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, he relocated to South America. He remained abroad for fourteen years, working in various locations including Buenos Aires, Bogotá, and Santiago, before eventually returning to Spain.

Oteiza established himself as a key theorist of Basque modern art. In 1953, he achieved international recognition as the sole Spanish sculptor selected for the Monument to the Unknown Political Prisoner competition, with the project appearing at the Tate Gallery. The following year, he won the Spanish National Award of Architecture for a chapel design on the Road to Santiago, a project developed alongside architects F. J. Sáenz de Oiza and Luis Romaní. His work often intersected with urban planning, including a 1970 award-winning project for the Plaza de Colón in Madrid, co-designed with Angel Orbe, Mario Gaviria, and Luis Arana.
Intellectual Contributions and The Gaur Group
Beyond his physical creations, Oteiza authored significant essays on aesthetics. In 1963, he published Quosque tandem!, a study of Basque soul and aesthetics rooted in prehistoric art. Three years later, he participated in the founding of the artistic collective known as Gaur. His influence on the academic and architectural landscape was later marked by an honorary membership with the Vascon-Navarrese Architect's Association and an honorary doctorate from the University of the Basque Country.
Legacy and Institutional Recognition
Following his death in San Sebastián in 2003, his estate established a museum in Alzuza, where he had resided since 1975. This institution preserves his extensive archive of drawings, collages, and sculptures. His lifetime of work received numerous accolades, including the 1985 Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts, the 1988 Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts, and the 1996 Pevsner Prize. Other distinctions include the Universal Basque Prize and the Lan Onari, both conferred in 1998, and the Manuel Lekuona Award received in 1996.
