Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa served as the president of the Portuguese sports club Porto from 1982 until 2024. During his tenure, he became the football executive with the most titles won, securing 69 trophies. He held the position for more days than any other president in the history of association football.
Early Career and Directorial Roles
Born in 1937 in Freguesia de Cedofeita, Pinto da Costa initially worked as a bank teller and functionary. His involvement with Porto began in 1953 when his grandmother registered him as an associate. By his early 20s, he held directorial roles, eventually leading the rink hockey department in 1962 and the boxing department in 1967. In 1969, he became the head of all amateur departments following an electoral victory for the list of Afonso Pinto de Magalhães.

Following a hiatus, he returned to Porto in 1976 as director of football to address a 19-year league title drought. Collaborating with coach José Maria Pedroto, he oversaw the club's victory in the 1976–77 Taça de Portugal. Under his direction, the team won consecutive league titles in 1977–78. Internal disputes regarding the influence of various sporting departments led to the resignation of both men in 1980.
Presidency and European Success
Elected as the 31st chairman of Porto on 17 April 1982, Pinto da Costa took office six days later. He reunited with Pedroto, who managed the team until his death in 1985. Under his presidency, the club reached its first European final in 1984. In 1987, Porto secured the European Cup after defeating Bayern Munich. Later, under the management of José Mourinho, the club captured the UEFA Cup and the Champions League in consecutive seasons.
Professional League and Controversy
Beyond his club duties, Pinto da Costa served as the president of the Portuguese Professional Football League from 1995 to 1996. His career was marked by the Apito Dourado corruption scandal. Although he received a two-year suspension and a €10,000 fine in May 2008, he was eventually absolved of the charges in April 2009. Pinto da Costa died in Porto in 2025 and was buried at the Cemetery of Agramonte.
