Early Development and Breakthrough
Valdivia joined the youth academy at Colo-Colo in 1993. By 2003, at age nineteen, he was promoted to the first team. That same year, he moved on loan to Universidad de Concepción, where he made his professional debut on 16 March 2003 against Cobresal. His performance during the Torneo Apertura, including a notable goal against Universidad de Chile, established him as a starter. Following subsequent loan spells at Rayo Vallecano in Spain and Servette in Switzerland, he returned to Colo-Colo in 2005 to refine his play under coach Claudio Borghi, winning the 2006 Torneo Apertura title.

In August 2006, Valdivia transferred to Brazilian club Palmeiras for a $3.5 million fee. His 2007 season saw him earn multiple individual accolades, including the Bola de Ouro and the Campeonato Paulista Most Valuable Player award. He later secured a 2008 Campeonato Paulista title, a 2012 Copa do Brasil, and a 2013 Série B title with the team. Between 2004 and 2017, he represented Chile, appearing in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups and three editions of the Copa América.
Career Transitions and Retirement
Valdivia experienced several shifts in his professional trajectory, including a tenure at Al Ain starting in August 2008, where he won the Etisalat Emirates Cup, President Cup, and Super Cup. He returned to Palmeiras in 2010 before signing with Al-Wahda in 2015. After additional stints at Colo-Colo and Morelia, he announced his retirement from football on 1 July 2022 during an appearance on the ADN Radio Chile program Los Tenores, citing intentions to pursue management and work in television.
