Early Development and Academic Foundation
Born in Hamburg in 1948, Browne was the son of a British Army officer who later worked for the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. His formative education occurred at The King's School in Ely followed by St John's College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a First Class degree in physics. He further refined his expertise in business through studies at Stanford University in California.
Ascension within BP
Browne spent his professional life at BP, holding operational roles across Alaska, New York, San Francisco, London, and Canada. By 1984, he served as group treasurer. He rose through executive positions, including time as chief financial officer of Standard Oil of Ohio, before becoming chief executive officer of BP Exploration in 1989. In 1995, he assumed the role of group chief executive.

His leadership period was characterized by the mergers with Amoco and ARCO and the establishment of TNK-BP for access to Russian oil reserves. Simultaneously, he sought to re-brand the corporation, linking its identity to the phrase Beyond Petroleum. He committed the firm to a 10% reduction in its CO2 emissions by 2010, an objective the company reached nine years early.
Departure and Public Disclosure
In 2007, Browne resigned following a legal battle regarding the public disclosure of his private life and relationship with Jeff Chevalier. A High Court judgment revealed that he provided false information to the court regarding the origins of the relationship. He subsequently resigned as a non-executive director of Goldman Sachs and stepped down from his executive position at BP.
Post-Executive Roles
Browne entered the House of Lords in 2001. His later career includes serving as the president of the Royal Academy of Engineering from 2006 to 2011. He has held positions as a partner at Riverstone Holdings and as an advisor for Stanhope Capital. In 2025, he participated as a candidate in the University of Cambridge Chancellor election.
