John Adedayo Bamidele Adegboyega began his career on stage before achieving prominence as a teenage gang leader in the 2011 comedy horror film Attack the Block. His performance in that production served as a precursor to his international breakthrough playing the stormtrooper Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, which spanned from 2015 to 2019.
Early Development and Education
Born on March 17, 1992, in the Camberwell district of London, Boyega grew up in Peckham. His initial exposure to performance occurred at Oliver Goldsmith Primary School, followed by years of training at Theatre Peckham. He pursued secondary education at Westminster City School and later studied for a National Diploma in Performing Arts at South Thames College. He also attended the Identity School of Acting in London and briefly enrolled at the University of Greenwich for film studies and media writing before departing to prioritize professional acting engagements.

Following his early work in British productions like Junkhearts, Boyega secured his role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, released in 2015. He subsequently appeared in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. Throughout this period, he expanded his filmography with roles in Kathryn Bigelow's Detroit and the 2018 film Pacific Rim Uprising. His work has been recognized with the BAFTA Rising Star Award and the Trophée Chopard, both received in 2016.
Production and Diverse Roles
In January 2016, Boyega established his own independent production company, UpperRoom Productions. The firm co-produced Pacific Rim Uprising and has since entered into a first-look agreement with VIS Kids. His acting portfolio includes the historical drama The Woman King, the 2022 Sundance entry Breaking, and the science-fiction comedy They Cloned Tyrone. He also won a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of Leroy Logan in the Small Axe anthology series.
